Summer School 2023

The Summer School aims to attract doctoral and post-doctoral students, as well as researchers and young professionals not only in law, political science and international and European studies, but also from other sea-related sectors, such as maritime economics and marine science, where an understanding of the impact of EU Law is becoming more and more essential. Among the speakers will be the Registrar of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, senior representatives of other relevant international and European organizations and institutions, personnel of the Italian Coast Guard and staff of the Italian Navy’s Hydrographic Institute, in addition to practitioners and academics from various Universities in Italy and abroad.

Outline programme 2023

The two weeks of the summer school will be structured around four main modules (introduction to law of the sea and the role of the EU; maritime delimitation and dispute settlement; maritime safety, marine environmental protection and sustainable development; individuals at sea including migration by sea) during which a mixture of traditional ex cathedra lectures, to be delivered by academics and practitioners. Additional activities will include a visit to the Italian Navy’s Institute of Hydrography. Group works will also be organized, with a view to further deepening the knowledge of the topics covered during the modules and to stimulate interaction among participants.

Typically, teaching will occupy four academic hours in the morning and two academic hours in the afternoon (excluding Fridays when afternoons will be free). In total, 56 academic hours of didactics will be ensured.

Those who have successfully participated to the various activities will be issued a certificate of attendance.

Admission procedure

Applications will be examined on a rolling basis and interested candidates are therefore invited to apply as soon as possible. No more than 25 participants will be admitted. Please write to summerschool@eu-los.eu.

Fee waiver positions

NEW! For the second time this year, we will offer up to two positions on a fee-waiver basis. These will be dedicated to participants who are nationals of (and will be travelling from) countries currently (2024) listed among low-income economies according to the World Bank (reference). The deadline for applying will be 31 May 2024 and successful candidates will be informed on or before 7 June 2024. Only if none or only one eligible candidate from a low-income economies will apply by the above-mentioned date, also candidates who are nationals of countries currently (2024) listed among lower-middle-income economies according to the World Bank (reference) will be considered for the fee-waiver positions (provided that they will be travelling from their countries of citizenship for the purpose of attending the summer school). The selection of candidates for the fee-waiver positions will fall under the exclusive responsibility of the Scientific Committee and will be based on merit, taking into account their curriculum vitae and their academic and professional profile only. The overall, maximum number of such fee-waiver positions will be two. The waiver only covers the tuition fees and NOT travel, administrative, accommodation and living costs as well as any other incidental cost.

Teaching period

The summer school will be held from 28 August – 8 September 2023.
It will consist of 56 academic hours of teaching activities inclusive of traditional ex cathedra lectures, classroom training and group activities and a half-day roundtable.

Certificate and accreditation

Participants who actively participate in the whole course and successfully complete the assigned coursework will be issued with a certificate of attendance.

The course has been credited by the Department of Law of the University of Genoa with 9 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits.

Fee and payment

No tuition fee will be applied. Participants attending in person will be required to pay a symbolic contribution of Euro 500,00 which will include lunch breaks throughout the two weeks period.
