How to apply

The application period runs from 1 May3 August 2018; please send an e-mail in order to obtain additional information or use the electronic application form provided to apply. This will be sent automatically to the organizzation together with the applicable attachments. No more than 25 participants will be admitted.

The ideal candidate will have completed a five- or at least a three-year long university program in law, political science, international relations, maritime studies, marine science, maritime economy or equivalent.
Students enrolled in a University program lasting longer than three years, who are at least in their fourth year and with an interest in the field will also be considered.
Ph.D. students, post-doctoral researchers and young professionals in any of the above areas are encouraged to apply.

The working language of the summer school is English; a good command of English is therefore essential and evidence of proficiency may be requested.

Teaching period

The summer school will be held from 27 August – 7 September 2018.
It will consist of 56 academic hours of teaching activities inclusive of traditional ex cathedra lectures, classroom training and group activities, a study visit to the Italian Navy’s Hydrographic Institute and a half-day roundtable.

Venue

The main venue will be the state-of-the-art training center of the Genoa Bar Association. The precise address is Via XII Ottobre, 3 – 16121 Genova (second floor).
Some of the activities will take place in other locations, to be advised in due course, including the University of Genoa main building and the premises of the Italian Navy’s Hydrographic Institute.

The training center of the Genoa Bar Association is located in front of the Genoa Courthouse, one minute away (by foot) from Genoa’s landmark street Via XX Settembre and iconic Piazza De Ferrari.

Certificate and accreditation

Participants who actively participate in the whole course and successfully complete the assigned coursework will be issued with a certificate of attendance.

The course has been credited by the Department of Law of the University of Genoa with 9 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits.

Fee and payment

Regular fee: € 500.00.

“Early bird” fee: € 250.00 for successful applications received on or before 15 June 2018.

The fees indicated above cover tuition and study materials only. Travel, accommodation and all other contingent costs (including insurance coverage if applicable or needed) will have to be born by the individual participants directly.

Registration fees will not be reimbursed in case of cancellation or no show.

Fee waiver positions

THE DEADLINE FOR APPLYING FOR A FEE WAIVER POSITION HAS ELAPSED ON 15 JULY 2018

NEW! For the first time this year, we will offer up to three positions on a fee-waiver basis.
These will be dedicated to participants who are nationals of (and will be travelling from) countries currently (2018) listed among low-income economies according to the World Bank (reference).
The deadline for applying will be 15 June 2108 and successful candidates will be informed on or before 22 June 2018.

After this deadline has expired, also nationals of countries currently (2018) listed among low-middle-income economies and upper-middle-economies according to the World Bank (reference) will be considered for the fee-waiver positions (provided that they will be travelling from their countries of citizenship for the purpose of attending the summer school), subject to the fact that not enough eligible candidates from low-income economies have applied within the above-mentioned deadline.
In this second round, the deadline will be 15 July 2018 and successful candidates will be informed on or before 22 July 2018.

The selection of candidates for the fee-waiver positions will fall under the exclusive responsibility of the Scientific Committee and will be based on merit, taking into account their curriculum vitae and their academic and professional profile only.

The overall, maximum number of such fee-waiver positions will be three. The waiver only covers the tuition fees and NOT travel, accommodation and living costs as well as any other incidental cost.

Admission procedure

Subject to the process described above for fee-waiver positions, applications will be examined on a rolling basis and interested candidates are therefore invited to apply as soon as possible.

Applications received on or before 15 June 2018 will be examined on or before 22 June 2018 and, when successful, in order to benefit of the “early bird” rate, will have to be followed by dispatch of proof of payment to summerschool@eu-los.eu no later than on 30 June 2018.
Unless all available places are taken earlier, the admission process will end on 3 August 2018,as soon as possible and on 10 August 2018 at the latest.
In order to be admitted, successful applicants will have to show proof of payment by sending it to summerschool@eu-los.eu by 17 August 2018.
